I was just sitting down to do some blogging when my electricity went out.

In my last post, I talked about being nostalgic. So, in fairness, I shall now tip my cap to modernity, which for all its faults, has at least given us relatively reliable power compared to “the old days”.

Peter Hitchens, brother of Christopher, has an interesting post on his blog about how modern Western technology only functions in optimal conditions, whereas older, less sophisticated stuff–as made in Eastern Europe–works in all sorts of conditions:

“That’s why, if a conventional Third World War had ever been held, the USSR would probably have won. NATO planes would have been grounded by drizzle. Soviet MiGs would have flown in all weathers in huge numbers. NATO tanks, with their superb fire control, would have suffered ceaseless computer glitches. Soviet tanks, crude and simple, would have lumbered on regardless and kept shooting.”

Weaponry aside, it is an interesting issue that I suspect comes up in the design philosophy of all sorts of things.

I liked the sound of the phrase “Twitter = Newspeak” that I used here, so I Googled it. Most of the results were nothing, but the odd thing was, one of the few results that actually matched my intent in using the phrase was from a user on a forum dedicated to the Buffalo Bills, the football team that is mentioned in the post were I used that phrase.

To make it even weirder, the aforementioned Bills happen to be my favorite football team, and yet I have never even gone to that site. This all seems like a rather remarkable coincidence to me.

I’ve made a few changes to the look of the blog. Let me know what you think.

I was originally just going to temporarily set the look of the blog back to the default settings it had when I first started it, and call it a “throwback” just to be funny. But I got to playing around with the designer, and you know how it is…

I won’t be posting tomorrow because of the holiday. Of course, I figure you folks won’t be reading this blog tomorrow either; so it seems like an effective compromise.

So, I was all set to put up some posts on Saturday afternoon when my internet connection died. It didn’t come back till late yesterday. As a result, many of the Halloween-related posts I was working on, including the one mentioned in this post, could not be put up.

Maybe I’ll post them anyway, but right now I’m thinking I’ll save them for next year.

I’m just glad that on Saturday morning I bothered to set this post to go up automatically.

…But about twenty minutes or so ago, a post went up that I didn’t mean to put up yet, (it’s still a work in progress) so I removed it just now.

I hate the idea of removing posts, but I hate the idea of publishing an unfinished one more. I’m also experimenting with posting at a particular time set in advance, so you might see some test posts go up for a bit.
